Originally airing on PBS in 1973, An American Family was a groundbreaking documentary series showcasing the day-to-day lives of the Loud family living in California. The series proved that audiences were ready for non-scripted television drama and paved the way for future reality television. Recently HBO produced a movie called Cinema Verite, starring Diane Lane and Tim Robbins, that reveals the true story of the Louds and their odyssey from typical family to television pioneers. Both this film and a two-hour compilation of highlights from the series itself are available in the library's collection.
