One-Night Reads

Are you looking for something to read that you can finish in one or two sittings? Not interested in reading a book that is too heavy to carry up the stairs? Maybe you don’t currently have much free time and want something to read that you can complete in a couple of days. Just because a book is slim does not mean it can’t be jam-packed with an exciting story and interesting characters.

The Queen of the Mystery Novel, Agatha Christie, wrote numerous mystery stories that can be devoured in one or two sittings. Her two main recurring characters are detective Hercule Poirot and amateur detective Miss Marple. Hickory Dickory Dock features Hercule Poirot as he investigates several thefts at a student hostel. The Moving Finger finds Miss Marple probing for clues as a series of poison pen letters shatter the peaceful way of life in a small village.

Many Stephen King books are over 800 pages and weigh several pounds. However, if you are looking to try a shorter King novel look no further than Blockade Billy, a charming tale about a minor league catcher who gets called to the big leagues. This short novella reads like an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Winner of the Man Booker Prize for 2011, The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes begins with a group of teenagers in 1960’s England and follows one main character, Anthony, as he reaches middle age and ruminates on his past as mysteries and secrets are revealed.
