Join us in the Program Room for a fascinating look at our place in space. What was once thought to be a simple system of 9 planets orbiting around a single star has been found to be much more complex and mysterious than we ever imagined. We now know that our solar system consists of 8 planets, several dwarf planets, over 300 moons, millions of asteroids and trillions of comets. Mars has recently been found to have the building blocks of life and some of the moons of our solar system have volcanic activity, plate tectonics, and submerged oceans. A few of those moons have atmospheres containing oxygen, and some are even thought to be currently capable of supporting life as we know it. And if that's not enough, we will finish off the lecture with a fascinating review of the scientific theory that our sun may have a dark companion star called Nemesis that may orbit our sun every 26 million years wreaking havoc on planet Earth! Don't miss this family-friendly, 60 minute, graphic-rich multimedia lecture about our fascinating corner of the universe! Greg McCauley, Executive Director of the Link Observatory and Space Science Center and NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador will present this program. This free program is for adults, teens and families with children ages 10 and older. No registration is required. For more information, stop by the Reference Desk or call (317) 844-3362. The program is presented by The Link Observatory and Space Science Center. For more information about The Link Observatory and Space Science Center, please visit www.linkobservatory.org.       The Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation presents author Doug P. Zipes, MD, Distinguished Professor Emeritus on Medicine. In cardiology, many people know Dr. Zipes. In fiction, they say, "Who the heck is he?" Dr. Zipes will give a presentation and sign his latest published book "Ripples in Opperman's Pond." Book sales and signings will follow the presentation. Book sale proceeds benefit the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation. "Ripples in Opperman's Pond" is a high-stakes thriller set in the world of big-money medicine. A chain of unanticipated events culminates in a life-or-death decision two brothers never thought they would have to make. Identical twins Dorian and Daniel Sloane grow up inseparable, sharing the same tubes of toothpaste as children and their lives as adults. Loyalty proven many times, they have been saving each other since the day Dorian rescued Daniel from drowning in Opperman's Pond. Now, with Dorian as head of a multinational pharmaceutical company and Daniel as an innovative cardiologist volunteering in Africa, the brothers come together once again. A devastating midair collision on the basketball court during a Celtics/Pacers game sets falling dominoes in motion. Dr. Doug Zipes graduated from Dartmouth College, Harvard Medical School, and Duke University Medical Center. As distinguished professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, he has published 14 textbooks and more than 800 medical articles. His first novel, "The Black Widows," was selected by ForeWord Reviews as a finalist for its 2011 Book of the Year Award. Registration is not required for this program. For more information, call the library Foundation Office at (317) 814-3905. This program will be held in the Program Room.

However, if you want to, you can also set a goal for yourself to read 5000 or more pages this summer and win the right to call yourself a Voracious Reader. Those of us that are setting this goal are meeting weekly during the summer in the Program Room to tell about what we've been reading and to cheer each other on. We will also eat reading-related snacks and make something or play something or do something different each week. One of last year's Voracious Readers said, "I thought it would be just sitting around talking but it was a lot more fun than that."

To complete the 2013 Young Adult Summer Reading Program for people in grades 6-12, you need to read 1000 pages between Monday, June 3 and Tuesday, August 6.

The task is daunting because 7-year-old Gee suffers from severe ADHD. To help her recovery, Mom arranges for her father to take the kids on a road trip. Pop reluctantly agrees, and they all set out for Kansas, helping Pop search for wind-power-generating sites. Ronnie quickly becomes a buffer between Pop and Gee while trying to contain her brother's outrageous behaviors so that Pop won't throw a tantrum and drive everyone home.
