Silver Sparrow
by Jones, Tayari
Plot/Summary:
This is the story of two young women who are the daughters
of James Witherspoon, a bigamist. Dana Lynn and her
mother Gwendolyn know about James' first wife Laverne and
daughter Chaurisse, but Laverne and Chaurisse have no idea
that James has a second family. The families live in the
same Atlanta neighborhood. The girls are just months
apart in age but attend different schools. James takes
great lengths to keep the girls apart but a teenage party
puts the half-sisters' parallel lives on a collision
course and life will never be the same for anyone.
Comments:
This novel was one of Library Journal's top ten
books of 2011. The first half of the book is told through
the voice of Dana Lynn and that of Chaurisse completes the
book. If you like Alice Walker's The Color Purple
or Jesmyn Ward's Salvage the Bones, you may want to
try Silver Sparrow, with its rich, well-developed
characters and lyrical writing.
