In the Company of Men: A Woman at The Citadel
by
Mace, Nancy
Plot/Summary:
Nancy Mace recounts her experience as the first woman to
graduate from The Citadel, starting with her decision to
apply to her father's alma mater and concluding with her
historic graduation. Most of Mace's story focuses on her
first year as a "knob" when constant degradation by
upperclassmen is the norm, regardless of gender. She
explains the traditions behind the historically all-male
military college and how she made herself a part of them.
Mace is candid about her learning disability, her famous
father (Army Brigadier General James E. Mace, the most
decorated living Citadel graduate), and her fear of failure
that allowed her to overcome enormous adversity and
prejudice.
Comments:
This is a compelling story about the determination of a
woman to succeed in spite of overwhelming sexism and a
learning disability. Mace's insight into her own
shortcomings and those of the institution she resolved to
conquer show maturity beyond her age. She tells her tale
with the honor and pride instilled by her father and her
alma mater.
