The Good Earth
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
As a classic, this book is considered a must read. I'm not sure whether I really liked it or I'm just glad to have finished it. I did not like Wang Lung, the book's central character. The look at China, as depicted in the book, made me glad I never had to live there, particularly as a woman. -- Added by dabell on 03/03/2013

Funny in Farsi
Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
A quick and hilarious read from the point of view of a young Iranian woman as she grows up in America. Tales of her family will touch her heart and make you laugh all at the same time. Especially funny if you have foreign parents or relatives, as I do--I definitely saw traces of some of my family members in this book! -- Added by gfr@IU on 03/03/2013

The Cat's Table
The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
I loved the writing of Michael Ondaajte! The plot is a litle slow in parts but the but was swept away by the writing...beautiful! It centers on three boys journey by ship from Sri Lanka to England. They are joined at the "cat's table" for meals, the table the furthest away from the captain's table. There's a tailor, a botanist, a burned-out pianist, a retired ship junker, and a mysterious spinster. There's also a chained murderer and a deaf girl. The discoveries of childhood and a lifelong journey . . -- Added by bookaddict on 03/02/2013

Finding Camlann: A Novel
Finding Camlann: A Novel by Sean Pidgeon (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
I had great hopes for this new book about an archaeologist's search for the real King Arthur of legend but I found that the story became bogged down in academic discussion of the Arthur legends. Even though I am usually fascinated by anything Arthurian it seemed to me that this story never really went anywhere. -- Added by nkennedy on 02/27/2013

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
This is a non-fiction book that reads like fiction. I don't usually like non-fiction, but this is so interesting and has a great flow. It's about an african american woman whose cells were harvested without her knowledge, in a time before informed consent. Her cells are still alive today and have helped us find a cure for polio and many other diseases, also started a multi-million dollar industry of cell production. Excelent. -- Added by ekruger1974 on 02/27/2013

Wild
Wild by Cheryl Strayed (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
While this book could fit into four of the subject categories, I learned more about the author of this book than I have learned about other individuals in biographies. What remarkable determination for survival and identity during her horrific life challenges--alone. Amazing read about an amazing woman. Be ready to be depressed; be ready to be joyful. I am anxious for this week's book club discussion with friends. -- Added by Janet McKinney on 02/25/2013
