Destiny of the Republic
Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
It must be admitted that I've never actually wondered about the life of James A. Garfield, but now I think I can answer most questions. It's hard to believe that presidents had almost no protection, traveled alone on regular transportation, and spent part of most days talking to office seekers! Even Garfield's vice president openly plotted against him! Standard medicine helped kill him and mental health was a problem back then too! The photos were helpful. -- Added by Ethel Hartman on 02/23/2013

The Lottery and Other Stories
The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
Highly recommended: This is a wonderful book of short stories that I just discovered, although it was originally published in 1949. Other reviewers praised it as "a brilliant collection of naturalistic glimpses of a world with terrifying holes in it." -- Added by brainsbe on 02/21/2013

The Giver
The Giver by Lois Lowry (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
I loved this book when I was younger and read it in middle school. My son read it recently as a pleasure read as well and really enjoyed it. Though honestly, I'm not sure that I could read it again as an adult. The hidden communities and rules that governor the community that Jonas lives in is too much to think about now after having children myself as well as family and friends serve in the military. -- Added by c317s on 02/18/2013

Jerusalem Maiden
Jerusalem Maiden by Talia Carner (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
I very much enjoyed this book. Although a bit heavy with Jewish tradition and language in the beginning, the book read very well. This is will be a great discussion book for our book club. A young Jewish maiden, struggles with her God given artistic talent and with the Jewish tradition of arranged marriage. I would recommend. -- Added by kcheesman on 02/18/2013

Little Women
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
It was nice re-read one of the old classics. I started with The Professor by C. Bronte but I couldn't force myself to slog through more than 4 chapters (boring beyond belief), so I went back to an old favorite. I think I must have read the children's version as a child and didn't realize that the original was much more detailed. I'm glad I finally read the whole book. -- Added by Roundaboutgirl on 02/18/2013

Nice Work If You Can Get It
Nice Work If You Can Get It by Michael Feinstein (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
I have enjoyed reading about Michael Feinstein's life and and especially the beginning of the book where the reader learns about his time with Ira Gershwin and the six years he spent with him. THis book touches on his interactions with other notable and famous musicians, some were pleasant experiences, others... well you read it and decide for yourself. We are lucky that Michael felt such a passion to save so much of our early musical history. An interesting read that sometimes made me wish I knew the music of the 20's and 30's better, so I could value his interactions more. -- Added by k2disos on 02/16/2013

Stories I Only Tell My Friends
Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
A mediocre actor talking about his mediocre career. He goes into extreme detail about for several chapters about filming "The Outsiders," only to have most of the scenes cut out. It is interesting, however, to read about the movie business and some of the struggles actors face. -- Added by Snow Angel on 02/16/2013

The Mighty Weakness of John Knox by Douglas Bond (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
Very encouraging to read about a man who was physically weak (from being forced to work as a rowing slave on a French Galleon for 19 months) and emotionally meek who God used to bring the good news of God's salvation through Jesus Christ to queens and common people. This was at the beginning of the Protestant Reformation when the Catholic Church was persecuting those who were attempting to make the Word of God available to everyone. -- Added by dtrieschman on 02/15/2013
