Adult Winter Reading Program: Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports Titles

Reamde
Reamde by Neal Stephenson (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
Yes. Though I for one am not a 'gamer'; Ilearned lots about those fellows who spend time on computer games with characters, magic spells and maps. Well drawn characters, which got me through 1,042 pages I couldn't put down. -- Added by june on 02/18/2013

The Nasty Bits
The Nasty Bits by Anthony Bourdain (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
A collection of Anthony Bourdain's essays--includes musings while travelling, filming "No Reservations" and about the food industry in general. Written in typical Bourdain fashion, he is outrageous, but that should not be a surprise when it comes to Bourdain. -- Added by gfr@IU on 02/17/2013

The Forgotten
The Forgotten by David Baldacci (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
I love that Baldacci brought back John Puller for another story. This in Florida and starts out with it being personal, as his aunt has passed away. Her death was natural causes from an accident... or was it natural, an accident or who knows what? As he delves into things,... well, read the book yourself and enjoy and find out! -- Added by k2disos on 02/16/2013

A Judgement in Stone
A Judgement in Stone by Ruth Rendell (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
This book falls more into the category of suspense than mystery, although Ruth Rendell is renowned for her mysteries. She is superb at capturing the psychological characteristics of the men & women who people her stories. In this book, you know what the key event is right from the first page, but you have to read the whole story to find out how & why. A very interesting book. -- Added by ElizabethR on 02/16/2013

Before I Go To Sleep
Before I Go To Sleep by S. J. Watson (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
Waking up every day not knowing where she is, who the man is beside her, or how she got there, Chrissie Lucas lives each day relying on what others tell her. An accident over twenty years ago has left Chrissie with a rare memory disorder. One where she can't retain new memories and has lost many of her old ones. Relying on her husband, Ben, to tell her about her life and fill in the gaps, Chrissie lives each day anew. When neuropsychologist Dr Nash takes an interest in Chrissie's case she slowly begins to piece her life together. Writing in a secret journal every day Chrissie forms some sense of memory, but the pieces don't fit together. The book is often redundant, but towards the end a twist makes the book interesting. Not exactly a thriller, but it is frightening if you think about this type of memory loss a possibility. -- Added by Snow Angel on 02/16/2013

Cuba Diaries
Cuba Diaries by Isadora Tattlin (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
The author of this book is an American housewife of a European businessman who is stationed in Havana in the mid 1990's when Cuba was struggling with economic problems related to the loss of support from the Soviet Union. I have a facination with Cuba which is frozen in the 1950's so I found this book very interesting to read although the book is full of Spanish words so it isn't an easy read unless you know Spanish. -- Added by Jean P on 02/14/2013

The Prisoner of Heaven
The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
Enjoyed this book. It was the third installment of this story which follows the Forgotten Cemetery of Books. I enjoyed this as much as his first, and cannot wait until he writes another. -- Added by kcheesman on 02/10/2013

Wild
Wild by Cheryl Strayed (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
Oprah's Book Club is back! - only I didn't realize it until after I had finished reading this memoir and went online to find out more. Along with mentioning that this title was Oprah's first selection for Book Club 2.0, Author Cheryl Strayed's website includes photos from 1995 when at age 26, she hiked 1100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert to the Bridge of the Gods - alone. Adventure, survival, and perseverance - this memoir is about overcoming obstacles and moving beyond grief - one boot-clad footstep at a time. The audio is every bit as good as the printed book - I switched back-and-forth between formats. -- Added by Nimble Novice on 02/09/2013
