Talking to the Dead
Talking to the Dead by Harry Bingham (Mystery, Horror, Crime, Business, Politics)
I don't normally go for the "CSI" type stories, but I've enjoyed this one. The main character, Fiona "Fi" Griffith's, a rather unconventional police woman in Wales, is as interesting and complicated as the crime she is working to solve. -- Added by zivah on 02/24/2013

The Lawgiver
The Lawgiver by Herman Wouk (Adventure, Suspense, Travel, Sports)
Interesting style: told through a series of emails, texts, and notes; and the author, himself, appears as a character in the otherwise-fictional book. I wasn't quite sure how to categorize this story of multiple individuals working together to create a movie about Moses... relationships? adventure? travel? -- Added by zivah on 02/24/2013

Fire in the Ashes
Fire in the Ashes by Jonathan Kozol (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
I read a couple of books by Jonathan Kozol, a journalist who documents the stories of America's urban poor, during college. This book is a where-are-they-now update on some of the families he had written about in the 90s. I recommend it whether you've read his older works or not. Plenty of background info is given, and the stories, both tragic and inspirational, had me laughing sometimes and crying others. -- Added by zivah on 02/13/2013

The Adults
The Adults by Alison Espach (Romance, Women's Fiction, Relationships, Humor)
An examination of the ugly side of upper-middle-class suburbia, it's similar to the film "American Beauty" but told from the perspective of a young woman in her teens through twenties. -- Added by zivah on 02/13/2013

The Party Is Over
The Party Is Over by Mike Lofgren (Mystery, Horror, Crime, Business, Politics)
Interesting analysis of current political issues from a Washington insider. It makes you think... And get angry. -- Added by zivah on 01/28/2013

The Dovekeepers
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman (Historical Fiction, Westerns, History)
A fictionalized account of the events leading the mass suicide of Jewish rebels at Masada (73 CE), told from the perspective of 4 women. As soon as I felt I understood the situations and relationships among these characters, there was an unexpected twist from a new perspective. Although a similar story is told in different voices, the angle is so different it feels new each time. -- Added by zivah on 01/17/2013

Panther in the Basement
Panther in the Basement by Amos Oz (Classics, Literary Fiction, Biography)
Memoir of author as a 12-year-old growing up in early-1950's Jerusalem. Fascinating perspective on the development of Israel. -- Added by zivah on 01/17/2013
