How does the Summer Challenge work?

Beginning May 31, register as an individual, family, or group to participate in the Summer Challenge. Caregivers, you can manage your children's activities from your account and log activities for multiple family members at once.

This year, you can choose to keep track of minutes read and activities completed--Adventure A(ctivites & Reading)-- OR track books read that are at least 100 pages long -- Adventure B(ooks). Whichever track you choose, you will earn badges that can be redeemed for prizes.

Adventure A(ctivities & Reading) -- Earn 1 badge for every 120 minutes read (up to 8 badges) plus 1 badge for completing 5 activities (up to 3 badges)

Adventure B(ooks) -- Earn 1 badge for each book of at least 100 pages (up to 11 badges)

If you earn all eleven badges, you’ll receive a free completion prize book.

As always, library staff are available to answer your questions and assist you as you take on the Summer Challenge.

What are the starting and ending dates of the Summer Challenge?

The Summer Challenge begins May 31 and ends August 15. All minutes, activities, or books must be logged within those dates, and all prizes must be picked up by August 15.

What are the prizes?

See the list of prizes. Prizes are available while supplies last and are subject to change.

Where do I go to pick up my prizes?

This year there is one central location for prize pick-up in the library lobby. Look for the balloon jet plane!

What is the last day to claim Summer Challenge prizes?

All Summer Challenge prizes must be claimed by August 15. No prizes will be awarded after August 15.

Who can participate in the Summer Challenge?

The Summer Challenge is open to everyone regardless of age. Infants, children, teens, and adults are all welcome to participate in the Challenge.

Do I have to live in Carmel to participate?

No, everyone is welcome to participate in the Summer Challenge.

Do I have to have a library card to participate?

No, you do not have to have a library card to participate; however, without a library card, you will not be able to complete some of the challenges.

Do I have to have an email address to participate?

No, you do not need an email address to participate. If you do not have an email address, library staff can help you register using a workaround solution.

Do I have to read/listen to library books or can I read/listen to books I already own?

You can read/listen to any books as you participate in Summer Challenge. The books you choose to read/listen to do not have to be library books.

Can a family member/friend give their badges to me?

No, badges cannot be shared.

What happens if I don’t use my badges before the Summer Challenge ends?

Badges do not carry over from year to year. Any badges not redeemed for prizes by the end of Summer Challenge are lost.

Do I have to go online to enter my badges, or can I keep track of them on paper?

A paper tracker is available if you would prefer. Using the paper tracker, you can keep up with the number of badges you have earned and bring the paper tracker with you when you are ready to claim prizes. Library staff will enter the badges you have earned as reflected on the tracker into your account. Click here for a printable badges tracker.

I participated in the Summer Challenge last year. Do I still need to enter my information again this year to register?

Yes, you will need to create a new account to participate this year, but with our new website platform, you will be able to keep your login information for next year.

Can my baby/toddler participate?

The Summer Challenge is open to everyone, infants through adults.

I run a preschool/daycare/daycamp. How can we participate?

We welcome groups to participate in the Summer Challenge using the group registration option. This will allow the group leader to track the number of badges the group earns collectively. The group leader will also be able to pick up prizes for the group.
