Jack Durkin is one in a long line of caretakers of Lorne Field, under local contract to spend his days pulling plants (known as Aukowies) from the field. If left unchecked, the Aukowies will grow to nine feet in length with razor sharp fangs and menacing faces and horns, and, within a few weeks, will take over the world. The Aukowie seedlings scream as Jack pulls them up by the roots. The townspeople are beginning to doubt the danger of the Aukowies and Jack's sanity. After an accident involving Jack's son, Jack is arrested and his wife turns against him. Will the Aukowies grow unchecked? Are they really a threat to the world?
The Caretaker of Lorne Field is an engrossing, mild horror story with little violence and blood. It would make a fantastic episode of The Twilight Zone.
