For this revised edition of the popular 1977 Moosewood Cookbook, Mollie Katzen has made her vegetarian recipes more healthy. She also has provided--in an appendix--helpful lists that indicate lowfat, nonfat, and nondairy recipes. The book is divided into sections on soups, salads, sauces and dips, baked things, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts (both healthy and decadent!). Many internationally inspired recipes (such as Satyamma's Famous Cauliflower Curry, Macedonian Salad, Brazilian Black Bean Soup, and Ukrainian Poppy Seed Cake) add variety. Instructions are clear, and the author has included preparation times and approximate yields for each entry.
This book has an especially appealing format; it is hand lettered and includes whimsical drawings by the author. Mollie Katzen has also written and illustrated several other vegetarian cookbooks: The Enchanted Broccoli Forest, Still Life with Menu, Mollie Katzen's Vegetable Heaven, and Pretend Soup (for children). Each book provides many meal ideas for vegetarians or those who are in search of some tasty lowfat recipes.
