In 1945, Claire Randall, a former WWII combat nurse, goes on a second honeymoon with her husband Frank. While investigating a mysterious circle of stones called "Craigh na Dun" she suddenly hears odd noises and after touching a stone has an experience that she just can't understand. After run-ins with several people who express suspicion at her exotic appearance, Claire comes to the realization that she has actually travelled back in time to 18th-century Scotland. Having faced the reality of her time travel, Claire must learn to live in a very different time and falls in love in the process.
This is the first novel by Gabaldon and the first in the Outlander series. Sensual and often violent, Gabaldon successfully transports the reader along with Claire to another time and place. Readers of historical fiction and romance will find this book appealing.
