Moon Called is the first in a series of books about Mercy Thompson. This book feels like a perfect combination of Jim Butcher's paranormal mysteries and the characters of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels. Fans of either series should try this one as their next read. The book is fast-paced but full of Mercy's feelings as she interacts with old emotional wounds while facing the mystery. This story begins to set up what is sure to be an intriguing paranormal urban world of magic, with characters including werewolves, vampires, witches, and fae. Romance becomes a secondary genre as the series continues, with bouts of action-packed fight scenes.
