Lucy Hathaway is running for home, fleeing the flames of the Great Chicago Fire, when she sees a woman holding a bundle of bedding at the window of a burning hotel room. Lucy instinctively reaches out for the bundle as it falls, not realizing until later that she has saved a baby girl from certain death. Five years later, when she is negotiating a loan with bank president Randolph Higgins, she discovers the baby she saved was his! The child Maggie is the moon and the stars to Lucy. Should she tell Mr. Higgins his daughter is not dead and risk losing the daughter she has raised for five years?
This romance is the third book in a series about three friends and how their lives were changed by the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871. The Hostage and The Mistress are the first two books in the series, but the books do not need to be read in order. The Mistress earned author Susan Wiggs the coveted RITA award, the highest award in the genre of romantic fiction given each year by the Romance Writers of America.
